Boat of Hope & Blue MumDays
A couple or really enjoyable pieces I made recently to promote two brilliant causes.
The Boat of Hope spot is promoting an incredible solo Atlantic crossing attempt by Bernie Hollywood OBE to raise funds and awareness for young people’s mental health causes. It was felt that the raw numbers detailing what Bernie was about to undertake told their own dramatic story, so this formed the basis of this awareness-raising bit of social media content.
Blue MumDays is a new podcast with an aim of “dispelling myths, smashing stigma & bringing hope to parents having a hard time” with post-natal depression. It is a true labour of love for Vikki Stephenson, born of first-hand experience and a determination to make a meaningful change to an area of mental health that still seems to be widely misunderstood or ignored. This animated promo was created to promote the launch across social feeds.
The Mandalorian & Disney+ Motion Graphics and Typography
For most of the last year , I have been working with the creative team at Disney+ to deliver TVCs and Social spots, usually in a role somewhere between an online editor and a motion graphics designer (with the above Mandalorian spot being an exception).
For a series of brand TVCs and social videos, I was asked to develop a GFX toolkit for creating ‘grid’ intros and outros highlighting the range of content available on the platform. Based on initial designs from graphics studio Copperworks, I created a customisable package that worked across multiple formats and was easily reversionable by other territories.
In the run-up to the launch of season 2 of The Mandalorian, I did perhaps the most enjoyable job of my whole lockdown - writing, editing and designing this Mandalorian social spot for producer Nik Chavda. It’s an attempt to recap the story arc of season 1 in an Instagram-friendly 60 seconds*, and was created to be easily localised (so, for example, text animations couldn’t be ‘word by word’.). In addition to making this spot I designed a bespoke animated captions system for other social video posts based on the palette of the S2 artwork.
I have also developed a number of dynamic typography style templates for the Social team (available to producers as customisable Premiere MOGRTs) for use on Instagram, whilst designing and executing variations on the brand typography for the Christmas campaign amongs others.
Delivering final, broadcast-ready commercials whilst working remotely has brought it’s own set of challenges, but it’s been an enjoyable process with a really great team.
*ultimate kiboshed by the show creatives sadly, who wanted a more traditional slow-paced recap…this is the way.
Friday Night Films on Fox
A nice predit-ing job for Fox Norway promoting their Friday night comedy movie strand. Satisfying to have got this written, offlined, onlined and delivered within less than four days of getting the rushes & brief. And it all translated neatly into Norwegian too, apparently (though I’m not sure what the Norwegian term for Russell Brand is).
